# Method:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease.
02 - Divide marshmallows and butter into three equal portions: approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - Melt 1 tablespoon butter in large saucepan over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in red gel food coloring until desired shade is reached. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until evenly coated. Press evenly into bottom of prepared pan.
04 - Wipe saucepan clean and melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over red layer.
05 - Wipe saucepan clean and melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over white layer.
06 - Sprinkle top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from pan using parchment paper, slice into squares, and serve.

# Expert Pointers:

01 -
  • No oven required—just a saucepan and your hands, making it perfect for hot summer days when turning on the oven feels like a crime.
  • The gel food coloring creates vibrant, Instagram-worthy layers that actually taste like marshmallow happiness, not artificial sweetness.
  • Kids can help press each layer, turning snack prep into a hands-on celebration that feels less like cooking and more like a project.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is non-negotiable—liquid coloring releases water that ruins the texture, turning your treats gummy and preventing them from setting properly no matter how long you wait.
  • Wiping your saucepan between layers matters more than it sounds; marshmallow residue burns slightly and can discolor your next batch or add unexpected flavors.
03 -
  • If you're making these ahead, don't cut them until a few hours before serving; cut squares dry out faster than the whole block, and refrigerating them makes them slightly tough compared to room-temperature storage.
  • The parchment paper trick is worth its weight in gold—without it, you're trying to flip and pry a delicate treat out of a pan, and without fail someone gets frustrated and smashes a corner.
